How the split works
Two defensible ways to estimate the work share of your home energy use:
- Area method: home office sq ft ÷ total home sq ft. Cleanest if your office is a distinct room.
- Hours method: work-from-home hours per week ÷ 168 hours in the week, capped at 30% to stay conservative.
Frequently asked questions
Which split method is more defensible — area or hours?
The area method is what the IRS regular method is built on, so it pairs naturally with tax records. The hours method is a good sanity check when your office is a corner of a shared room. They usually land within a few percent of each other.
Can I ask my employer to reimburse my electric bill?
Some companies include utilities in remote-work stipends; most do not. This calculator gives you the work-share number to put in the ask — pair it with the reimbursement budget calculator and the request email generator.
Should I use the average of the two methods?
If they disagree a lot, take the lower one when asking an employer (keeps the ask credible), and the documented one when preparing tax records. Never inflate the share to make the number bigger.
Does working from home actually raise my electric bill?
Usually yes in heating/cooling and lighting during work hours, though it is smaller than people expect — often 10–20% of the monthly bill. This tool shows the realistic work-attributable portion rather than the whole bill.
