Frequently asked questions

Which wall should the desk go against?

Place it against the wall opposite the door, ideally with a window to the side — this keeps the room entrance behind you, gives you a focused backdrop for video calls, and lets daylight fall from the side rather than into your screen.

How small can a home office room be?

About 8×8 ft (64 sq ft) is the realistic floor for one focused workstation — desk (5×2.5 ft), chair and clearance. Smaller than that and a fold-away desk or a corner nook works better than a full setup.

Do I need a separate room?

No — a defined "work zone" with a screen you can close at the end of the day matters more than four walls. A corner of the bedroom works if the desk faces away from the bed and lighting is decent. Read the home office setup guide.

How do I stick to the budget?

Buy in order: chair, desk, lighting first; monitor and storage can wait. Compare this plan with the gear checklist and ask your employer for a home office stipend before paying yourself.
