How this calculator works

The RTO commute cost calculator estimates your direct spending (fuel or transit fare, parking, tolls) plus the value of time you spend commuting each year. It then converts everything into an effective hourly wage: your real hourly pay after unpaid commuting hours are counted. This is the number worth bringing to a salary or hybrid-schedule conversation.

Note: estimates only. Vehicle wear-and-tear, insurance and depreciation vary widely; check with your employer's reimbursement policy for the official picture.

Frequently asked questions

How do I use the commute cost number in a salary negotiation?

Total your yearly commute cost (direct + time value), then frame a request around it: "Returning to the office costs me about $X and Y hours per year. Could we offset that with a salary adjustment or an additional remote day?" Pair it with our RTO salary negotiation template and the true commute cost guide.

Does my employer have to reimburse commuting costs?

Generally no — regular commuting between home and a fixed office is usually a personal expense under federal tax rules, and most states don't require reimbursement. Some companies offer commuter benefits (pre-tax transit/parking) voluntarily; it's worth asking HR.

What counts as "unpaid" commute time?

Under federal law (FLSA), ordinary commuting time to your regular workplace is generally not compensable. The "real hourly wage" here simply shows how much your salary is effectively worth per hour once that unpaid time is included — useful for your own planning and negotiation, not a legal claim.

How many remote days should I request to offset the cost?

Divide your yearly commute cost by the number of office days per year to get a per-day figure, then compare one fewer office day per week. This calculator shows the monthly saving directly — combine it with the hybrid weekly scheduler to plan the actual schedule.
